History of Unemployed Activism
Does anyone know much about the history of activism by unemployed Americans? I've been trying to research that. Apparently, the largest activist event staged by the unemployed was the Bonus March during the Great Depression. 15,000 unemployed veterans of World War I occupied an open area in Washington D.C. during the summer of 1932 asking the government to issue $1000 bonuses early that had been promised for 1945. There was a lot of sympathy for them, but their request was rejected and they were driven out of the capital by an army unit commanded by Douglas MacArthur and two were killed. The incident contributed to the defeat of Herbert Hoover by FDR. Of course, there's a lot of history to the labor movement, but activism by the unemployed to have been difficult and unfruitful. I'd like to know about other organizations, movements, and events. |

Bad Credit, No Job
Personally, I don't understand what your credit has to do with your ability to do a job. then you need to read and give this the widest possible dissemination-email your friends, distribute on forums you frequent (or plan to frequent :)) telephone, use the snail mail- and for heaven's sake, don't give your social security number to anyone else-no matter what they tell you-you can tell them that they are asking for a little jail time because apparently according to the SSN website, it's illegal to ask and it has always been illegal to ask. businesses with whom you are not employed have no right to request your number FOR ANYTHING! It's right here in black and white! This comes from "the employers guidance", side of the website so no, it's not out there where people can be aware of it http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnvshandbk/ssnvs_bso.htm The Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) WHAT IS SSNVS AND BSO? The Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) is one of the services offered by Social Security Administration's (SSA) Business Services Online (BSO). It allows registered users (employers and certain third-party submitters) to verify the names and Social Security Numbers (SSNs) of employees against SSA records. With SSNVS, you may: Verify up to 10 names and SSNs online and receive immediate results. There is no limit to the number of times the SSN Verification web page may be used within a session. Upload electronic files of up to 250,000 names and SSNs and usually receive results the next government business day. In addition to SSNVS, the BSO suite consists of Registration Services and Employer Services. Registration Services offer a User Identification Number (User ID) assignment, password selection and various registration maintenance functions. Employer Services offer W-2 file upload, W-2 and W-2c online key-in functions (no special software or forms required) and the ability to track files and view processing results and notices. THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT SSNs SSA can post employee wages correctly only when employers and submitters report employee wages under the correct name and SSN. Recording names and SSNs correctly is the key to successful processing of annual wage reports. It saves the employer and the administration processing costs and allows SSA to properly credit your employees' earnings record. Credits to your employees' earnings record are important in determining their future eligibility and payment of SSA's retirement, disability and survivor benefits. PROPER USE OF SSNVS SSNVS should only be used for the purpose for which it is intended. SSA will verify SSNs and names solely to ensure that the records of current or former employees are correct for the purpose of completing Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement). It is illegal to use the service to verify SSNs of potential new hires or contractors or in the preparation of tax returns. It is appropriate to use SSNVS only once an official employer-employee relationship has been established. SSA defines the existence of an employer-employee relationship as when one of the following has occurred: The employer’s offer of employment and acceptance by the person being hired (even though he/she hasn’t started working); and/or The future employee’s completion of the paperwork to establish the payroll record. Company policy concerning the use of SSNVS should be applied consistently to all workers; for example: If used for newly hired workers, verify information on all newly hired workers. If used to verify information on other workers, verify the information for all other workers. Third-party use of SSNVS is strictly limited to organizations that contract with employers to either handle the wage reporting responsibilities or perform an administrative function directly related to annual wage reporting responsibilities of hired employees. It is suggested that contracts between the third-party and the employer stipulate that the functions being performed by the third-party contractor adhere to the proper use of SSNVS. It is not proper to use SSNVS for non-wage reporting purposes such as identity, credit checks, mortgage applications, etc. Anyone who knowingly and willfully uses SSNVS to request or obtain information from SSA under false pretenses violates Federal law and may be punished by a fine, imprisonment or both. SSA may ban you and/or the company you represent from the use of SSNVS if SSA determines there has been misuse of the service. SSA returns all names and SSNs submitted. If the name and SSN does not match our records, SSA advises the following: This response does not imply that you or your employee intentionally provided incorrect information about the employee's name or SSN. This response does not make any statement about your employee's immigration status. This response is not a basis, in and of itself, to take any adverse action against the employee, such as laying off, suspending, firing or discriminating against the employee. NOTE: If you rely only on the verification information SSA provides to justify adverse action against a worker, you may violate State or Federal law and be subject to legal consequences. THIRD-PARTY VERIFICATIONS If an employer has hired you to handle his/her company's annual wage reporting responsibilities, a fee-based approach can be used when offering SSNVS to your clients. However, caution should be taken. SSA offers services such as SSNVS free of charge. Some companies in the private sector offer those same services for a fee and develop misleading brochures and advertisements. To discourage the use of misleading mailings about Social Security and Medicare, Congress enacted specific prohibitions in Section 312 of the Social Security Independence and Program Improvements Act of 1994 that broadened the existing deterrents. The prohibitions are listed in Title 42 of the U.S. Code, Section 1320b-10. To ensure that you conform to these legal requirements, be careful to adhere to the following: Be cautious not to suggest to your clients that this service is only available through you, Advise all customers that this service is available at no cost from SSA and that this service is not a unique or exclusive arrangement between SSA and your company, and Be sure not to give any impression when describing your SSN verification service to your clients that your company has an arrangement that allows direct access to SSA databases, program software, etc. NEW USERS You must complete BSO registration. Once registered, you will need to request SSNVS. You will not be able to complete the online SSNVS request process if: Your current employer did not file a Form W-2 for you with SSA. (Note: If you were hired in the last 18 months by your current employer, it is possible that SSA's records do not yet reflect your employment.), or You are currently self-employed but did not submit self-employment earnings to the IRS in the last taxable year. If either of the above statements applies to you, begin the online registration process as described in the Registration section of this handbook. BSO will display a message asking you to fax information to (570) 706-7874. There are several steps that must be completed before you can use SSNVS. You must: Register for BSO Login to BSO Request access to SSNVS Enter employer information Receive an Activation Code (mailed to your employer) Login to BSO Activate access Every BSO user must register separately. You may not register on behalf of another person. |

Bad Credit , No Job Update
Hi, everybody.............I now realize that the U.S. is in denial about this credit/employment thing. So far, everyone I've mentioned this to replies with a statement like : " ....employers don't check credit", or , "....yeah, right....." Well, I've got the proof. Whenever I go to fill out an application, I scan it, then, fill it out on my computer. My handwriting sucks. Leaving me a copy of the application in my files. And, usually, it's the last page where the (no optional) credit check form is located. Unfortunately, you have to sign this in order to have your employmlent application processed. I've got a copy of a couple of them......to show the scofffers who don't believe that ALL employers check credit. Lately, I've elevated to, at least, be called in to the company office for the interview (because they saw my resume online). But, when they get to the "credit check", that's when things fall apart. But, just tell the people who won't believe .....that ALL emplolyers DO check credit. Like I said.....I've got the proof. garystan |

Bad Credit, No Job
For a while, I was starting to receive contacts.....via e-mail.....about the positions I had applied for. Now, that has stopped. And I kow why. Bad Credit. As soon as the prospective employers find out about my bad credit, they don't even reply to the application. And the way it's going in America.....ALL employers check credit. Checking credit for from Custodial position right on up to Vice President of Company X, and everything in between. And, within the application, is a page that requires your signature in order to have the application processed. It's the Credit Check form. It give the prospective employer the right to check your credit. But, unfortunately, if you don't sign it...........the application isn't worth anything. So......it's gotten to the point that I am not able to work within the United States, because of bad credit. But, the thing is...........the reason I have this bad credit is due to severe illnesses. I had a few blood clots and an atrial fibrilation. Which, in turn, caused me to fall behind in my bills. Which, in turn, damaged my credit. MInd you....I'm not claiming to be a "victim". No............ It's jsut that the creditors insisted on having the "bills" paid in full. They wouldn't accept payments. (I should've shoved the payments down their throats.....or they don't get anything!!!!). But, I was "pushy" enough. That's my fault. But, like I said.....now, it's gotten to the point that I can no longer work in the United States, due to bad credit. Unfortunately, I need a job to be able to force those payments on the creditors. But, one can't have a job with bad credit......and one can't repair their bad credit without a job. One feeds off the other. garystan |

Before I go into other matters, I would recommend checking usa.jobs.gov, as the IRS will have many positions opening up soon. I already have employment. However, I created Yahoo group to amass resources for job searching, and to amortize the effort, I will pass this along. I also know many recruiters who could help supply positions. I already have employment, but I created a Yahoo group where I assembled folders of links for employment search purposes, and I have decided to amortize the effort that I put into assembling them, so I will send this to you. Please tell me how the group develops, especially with the current economic downturn. |

Many companies are hiring, however they are cutting back on spending. Make sure you go directly to company websites to check out their career centers. This may be the only place they are posting at this time. Also, go to your states local unemployment websites. They are not always easy to navigate however many companies post directly to these sites. Also, check out jobangels.org and check out Twitter. Recruiters also use LinkedIn. You can post your resume here and recruiters will find you. |

I understand the tailor the resume and the cover letter to the organization and all that advice. But the follow-up - say I have to send it to a PO Box? or fill out an app online and there is no information on how to contact HR? What would you do about that type of situation? Networking is okay unless everyone around you is going through the same thing - we have 1000+ people being laid off from one of the biggest companies around and getting anyone to listen to you is pretty much - "yep my husband, sister, brother, father, mother, cousin, great uncle on my mother's side is haivng the same problems. What's the best way if you are trying to look outside of your normal (like another state) geographical area? |

Hi Sydney Thanks for asking. The mortgage market is not the place to be right now. We are busy because the interest rates dropped but that will not last forever. I am doing network marketing and direct sales with Scent Sations/Mia Bella Candles. I absolutely love it. I get to meet a lot of different people from all over the country within the comforts of my own home. I get such a thrill helping someone reach their goals and dreams a lot like in the mortgage industry. I do home parties and vendor shows also for the immediate cash but my real love is in networking with others. You can check out my website at www.HomeAtMiaBella.com. I have been hearing a lot of stories about what is going on in the states. I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, a city and state with very high employment - and I am in the banking industry. I left the US August of 2008 for the MIddle East and have been here since. Although this region has seen some ups and downs, for the most part it is doing quite well because of all of the oil money. It was a huge move for me because I have lived my entire life in Cincy. But opportunties are trmendous out here, especially if you are American - tax free income too. How do you get the interview?
How do you get the interview? Several ways. Oh, let me introduce myself, for starters. I'm an employment counsellor, so I work with jobseekers all the time. I'm in Canada, as you can see on my profile, but there's not a lot of difference between job-searching here and in the US. Let's start with the traditional method: your resume. You say you have a great resume, and that'sterrific. But just having ONE great resume isn't enough. Your resume should be tailored to every job you apply for - that's the only way to make it stand out. So read the job posting carefully. Look at the company website. Use their language. State accomplishments that match what they're looking for. If their top need is for a particular skill, make sure that skill is at the top of your highlights list. And then make sure your cover-letter hits them between the eyes as well - show that you know the company, you've taken an interest in them (eg use Google Alerts to look for news updates, and comment in your letter about some achievement they've just had that you like). Show how your skills and experience match their need. And close by asking for an interview. Then, once you've sent your resume, follow up. Call and ask to speak to the hiring manager; politely and professionally express your interest in the job and ask for an interview. You can use the old 'I'm just checking that my resume has been received' trick as an excuse. Then, if you haven't heard from the company within a week or so of sending your resume, call to ask if a decision has been made on interviewing, and reiterate your interest in the position. Persistence can pay off :) That's the traditional, but most people actually get jobs through networking. Friends, neighbours, friends of friends etc. Join any organisations you can that might be helpful to you, if you can afford it. If anyone lets you know about a job at a place they know, get them or the person they know to hand in your resume, or arrange a meeting for you with the hiring manager. Employers love personal recommendations, because they tend to trust people they know more than complete strangers. It's often the case that if a resume is handed to them by someone they know that candidate goes to the top of the possibles pile. Keep trying. It WILL be harder right now, but persistence will get you that interview, and your chance to shine. Good luck! |

Ohhhhh! Ouch!!!!! I can feel your pain.... a friend of mine worked at a large company and had taken a promotion out of the midwest to the east coast. They are younger - just had twins 4 months ago, wife quit her job for the move and have no extended family where they are currently located. 2 weeks to the day after moving out there - he was told he was laid off. They are currently trying to make arrangements to get back to family with all of their belongings before running out of the severence he was given. It's tough all over.....good luck on your search. Ouch, thats rough! I hope he finds employment soon. |

How do you get the interview?
Hello, Ok, well there are so many things online on how to interview, but how do you actually interview? I'm great once I actually sit in the chair in front of the person conducting the interview, the problem is actually getting in the door. I send out ALOT of resumes, and my resume is designed well. I send it to jobs I'm overqualified for, jobs that I'm a little under qualified for and yes jobs that I'm right on the money. I have a good cover letter, its direct and to the point and doesn't read like a wall of text. So, whats the secret? |

Laid off after two months
Hey everyone, So I got hired to work for a beverage company as a sales coordinator (no I wont say which company because they have visibility). I worked there for two great months. My boss was great, they flew me to their HQ to meet everyone, I got a huge office and decent pay and benefits. I was so happy because it is so hard to find a good job with the economy the way it is. So to my surprise, the director of HR comes to my office and calls me into the conference room. Thats when he told me that because of budget constraints , they were laying me off. I was shocked, but it quickly escalated to curious. I asked my boss if it was something that I had done, but didn't get a reply. My outlook out box was clear of all duties when I left, and I was never late on anything. Oh well back to the greatness that is job hunting! |

My first interview... AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!
Hi all, I found this website via a CNN article and once I read this posting, I had to register and post a reply. I am a corporate recruiter for a mortgage servicing company in Northern California. And I can understand your frustration with interviewers and recruiters asking what appear to be really stupid J questions. However, we do ask these questions for a reason. Most interviewers and recruiters are the initial pre-screen before the hiring managers. In my industry, most of my candidates are “overqualified” and make substantially more than what I am offering. I recently placed a prior VP in an entry level position making less than ½ what he was making. To me, this candidate was a great find. Hit the ground running experience with minimal training required and when the market turned around, here is an employee that we can move up quickly. I covered all the salary & overqualified questions with this candidate. And the reason that I did, was because there were some of the first questions my hiring managers asked. And he was prepared for the questions from my interview with him. When it came time to make a decision, I still had to sell the candidate to overcome these obstacles. You kind of have to grin and bear these questions. I am also speaking from personal experience, as I went through this myself about a year and ½ ago. The company I worked for for 15 years went out of business. It’s tough, even for someone who interviews other people for a living! Other advice for job seekers – please, please customize your resumes to the position you are applying for. Look for and use key words that are in the job description. Doing this increases your chances of a recruiter reviewing your resume. Also, be prepared for targeted selection or behaviorial style interviewing. This process asks for specific examples from your prior work history. Specific means a project that you worked on with all the details, that one customer that really stands out in your mind that you sold XYZ widget to, or a really tough employee issue that you handled. I wish everyone the best in your job search and there are jobs out there! |

Advice On How To Cut Costs
Let me just say I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE CREATED THIS SITE I thought about it myself, but haven't gotten around to it ;) I have a short attention span (ADHD, I think - can't afford to get an actual diagnosis), so I have been unemployed as much as employed. I am working a temporary job right now, but who knows how long it will last. I have learned a lot over the years about how to survive being unemployed - especially in creative ways to cut costs. Here are a few tips I practice: 1. You can put dishwashing soap (like Palmolive) in your dishwasher instead of the thick stuff they sell you, but ONLY ABOUT A TEASPOON - it is more concentrated than the usual stuff you put in there. 2. Moving? Check out local stores that get regular stock in boxes - clean boxes - (auto part stores, computer stores, etc.) - also wrap breakables in newspapers - they may get your hands dirty, but no need to buy that stuff the stores sell you when you can get it for free! Also, when moving clothes from the closet, lay a sheet on a bed, lay a bunch of clothes - on hangers, if you like - on top of the sheet, and wrap them up in the sheet - lay on top of something in moving van so they don't get too wrinkled 3. No more cable TV?? Move the home computer into the living room and watch TV programs on Hulu.com or Fancast.com. They are GREAT! Most shows will post either the day after they air on regular TV (Daily Show, Colbert Report) and others after a week (Damages). Plus, you can see episodes of all of those old TV shows you can't watch on TV anymore (Barney Miller). Also, you can catch some really interesting stuff on Youtube (check out "Doll Face") 4. Stop eating out!! It's expensive and unhealthy - cook at home - ask the butcher to wrap meats in 1-2 person portions so you can thaw for each meal 5. Get rid of your home phone if you have a mobile phone - you only need one phone and if there is an emergency, use your neighbor's phone 6. Use public transportation, even if you have a car - much less expensive than paying for gas, insurance, etc. - only use car in case of emergencies and keep minimum amount of auto liability insurance ONLY 7. While you are unemployed, use that time to learn skills that might land you a job later - example, learn all sorts of computer languages (HTML, PHP, CSS, MySql) on www.w3schools.com. They have great tutorials that are super easy to use/learn. I learned basic HTML that I am using to start my own website soon. I have found it handy in many job situations - makes you more valuable, no matter what you are doing, if you can edit/fix the employer's website! 8. Use a bleach/water mix as multi-purpose cleaning solution - you don't need a lot of bleach - maybe 5 parts water to 1 part bleach; use gloves when applying and make sure there is plenty of air ventilation, but it can be used to clean thefloor, bathroom, etc. Keep in mind that bleach will fade color and if used on surfaces should be washed with plain water after cleaning so that lingering chemicals don't come into contact with skin; use gloves when applying. 9. Angel Food - look it up on the internet - a nonprofit organization that buys food in bulk and distributes to churches across the U.S.through participating churches - get a big box of food for $25 or so dollars (you must bring the box) 10. Time Exchange - I'm not sure if othercities have it, but check out Austin Time Exchange - a means of obtaining things/services without cash 11. Thrift Stores - again, not sure about other cities, but most thrift stores in Austin have one day of the week designated when they take 1/2 off everything in the store - find out when that day is in your neighborhood Well, that's all I can think of right now. I will add more if I think of some. I would love to hear advice others have to cut costs. |

Central IL Mom
HI There! Let me be the first to put myself out there - right now I am an unemployed single mom looking for WORK! What can I do? The short answer is all of the above! As a single mom - I've pretty much been there and done that on many things. Specifically, I have almost 20 years in the secretarial/administrative field - I can adapt to almost any situation or need from filing to fixing computers - I've done it all at one time or another. Are you a small business and want a web presence? I can do that! Are you a non-profit agency or a group needing graphic design advertising at a less than outrageous price? I can do that! Are you a self employed person who needs some help getting your business looking, sounding and feeling professional? I can do that! Are you a single mom or dad or just all around too busy trying to make a living - and you need that leaky faucet, squeaky ceiling fan, or other such minor household annoyances fixed or replaced and trying to hire someone is a major headache? I can do that! Need that lawn mowed or the flowers weeded? Sorry - that's why I have kids BUT--- THEY CAN DO THAT! (I have earned supervisor status!) Contact me at mumsmenagerie@comcast.net for more information and let me tell you how I can help you |

Changing Direction
After a long and fruitless search for the 'holy grail' of work in the corporate world, I've determined it's been driven out of existence due to the weakened economy and an ever-tightened list of job opportunities. I decided to part ways with the traditional, stress-inducing activity in favor of making an honest attempt at self-employment -- with very little capital. Instead of being the 'go-to girl' in the corporate rat race, I am reinventing myself to be the consultant; by adding KM principles to the oft-times disfunctional world of marketing and corporate communications, my goal is to create positive buzz and real change in the industry . Since self-employment is one item on my lengthy list of life's goals, and I figure, "What the heck; what else do I have to lose?" We'll see how it goes.
(I am glad I read CNN today, otherwise I might not have discovered this site.) |

I had started to change direction about a year and a half ago, by going back to school, but I thought I was in a secure job that I could stay in until I got my Ph.D. and was ready to enter private practice. If only I could have foreseen the almost-crash of the markets, working in the financial/investment field was definitely NOT a place to spend seven more years. Since I still have a few more years of school, I've already started to work on something I've wanted to do for a while that fits in nicely with my schooling, and hopefully I'll be able to have it going by fall, but it is tough to start something new when unemployment is the only income you've got, I've learned a lot about where to find free stuff online, that is for sure!! |

Fortunately I have yet to run into the overqualified gig yet, I've been lucky to just get interviews!! But I totally feel ya on the 20 year old HR people, it is so frustrating to interview with people that are my kid's age, and I know they are thinking "she's my mom's age". One thing they don't understand is the youth of today are going to be job hopping, it's the new thing, and who can blame them? So I make it apoint to let people know I am looking to make a long-term commitment to a position, even though I am in school, and that seems to be making a bit of a difference. Leslie |

You are preaching to the choir.
I was asked today if I was sure I would be happy with only making $12.00 per hour plus overtime pay since I had been making $40,000.00 per year as a QA Production Supervisor until my past employer closed their doors.
OK, the interviewer asked this for about the third time…So the mother and past supervisor of many in me kicked in...I told the interviewer that if I was NOT OK with the pay I would NOT HAVE bothered to get up, do my hair, my face, not to mention panyhose, put gas in the car (which I would not have needed if not for this trip), drive across town, and take up her time, my time IF I WAS NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY with $12.00 per hour plus overtime pay.
If we applied for the job then that should mean that we are willing to take the pay and the job regardless if we are over qualified. Some money is better than no money however no one is getting this.
I was told on my way out the door we will be in contact if you are chosen for the position. |

My first interview... AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!
Last week after dropping the kids off at school, I came home to get ready for my first interview. I donned my best blue suit. I was stressed by the mere fact that I was enduring unemployment at this point in my life. I had always been the interviewer and now I was on the receiving end. The "girl" in HR was no more than twenty years old. She stated numerous times, "Are you sure you don't think you are over qualified?" Well of course I'm over qualified!!! But if I choose to go back to bartending at a Casino to make more than what my unemployment brings in, who cares? I explained that although I have spent the better part of the past two decades as a Culinary Writer and Restaurant Consultant, I'm still one heck of a mixologist. So... she forwarded my resume to the Food & Beverage Manager... And guess what? No call back. So I called yesterday and asked for the Manager. He explained that he did not have any Management positions available. I explained that I was not interested in Management, but would rather be considered for one of the numerous Bartending or Beverage Server positions they had posted. He said that he would review my resume and call if he was interested in interviewing me. ARRRRRGGGHHHH!!! This is so frustrating!!! |

Changing Directions for some of us has and can be a bit scary. However for me it has been a lot of fun too.As soon as I saw the writing on the wall along with many phone calls from dear old Dad (Depression Era Kid) I started looking into recession/depression proof employment. So as I became unemployed from my production supervisor job with high-end golf apparel. I started re-making myself, literally from the inside to the outside. I joined the local gym, got a trainer, and am now going for a physical for a corrections position. There will never be a shortage of bad guys that need keepers. Granted this type of drastic change I chose to make in my life may not be someone else’s thing but if this 46 year old 20 pounds over weight mom can do it anyone can.My daughter who will graduate this year from high school is also now rethinking her major and looking into something that can continue to feed and cloth her through financial good times as well as the bad times. The main thing is everyone out there today needs to start thinking outside of their comfort box especially for us that are knocking on and/or have gone through that 50 door. Because the older we get the harder it is to re-make, re-think and re-sell our selves. |

Wow... thanks. I have an Aldi near me but I've never been there. I just went to their website and they are worldwide.... Did not know that either. I will definitely have to check it out. I'm dieting and produce at Walmart is always fluctuating. I will also have to google for coupons, I didn't realize companies would allow you to print out your own. Thanks Again, Kat |

As an unemployed single Mom of three, clipping coupons and shopping smart is key to stretching my unemployment. First thing I do is shop at Aldi. The have by far the lowest prices on produce and fruit. Although you have to bag your own stuff, it's totally worth it with the savings. And unlike those cheapy generic stores, the products are often name brand or Euro. If I need dog food or personal products at Wal-mart, I always google coupons for the particular items. Last week I saved $4.00 on Pull-ups, $3.00 on large bag of dog food and another $2.00 on toilet paper. I tell you... it certainly adds up. |

Preparation is Key
I've had many interviews over my professional career. One thing I can say is.... prepare, prepare, prepare! Everything from the polishing your shoes, to knowledge about the company for which you are applying. Each aspect is of the job seeking is important. First off... it's important to look good. If you don't have a suit, get one! Professional attire will make a statement when you walk in for the interview. Make sure your shirt is ironed and the tie is normal, no Looney Toons Characters or "statement" ties. Women should wear hosiery if wearing a skirt. If you have a question about getting everything together, just ask the sales person at the department store, or better yet, hop onto this forum and get advice. Next... make sure you know about the company you are applying with. It's important to know what the position for which you are applying entails. Read over the job announcement and know the keywords. By having that knowledge alone, you will be able to answer the interviewers questions with those key phrases, ultimately speaking their language. The day of your interview, be sure you show up early. Now I'm not recommending you show up an hour ahead of time, anywhere between 10-15 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview is appropriate. Also, make sure you are nice and pleasant to everyone. I actually had a person I didn't know come through the front door and into the lobby area while I was waiting. This person struck up a conversation and I later found out it was the Executive Producer for the station. She, as I found out later, was feeling me out prior to the interview. During the interview, take a deep breath and remember that the person or person's sitting at the table are just like you. Sit up straight and show your confidence in your ability to do the job. There can be multiple layers to a job interview and often times includes multiple interviews. I've never had just one interview with any job. I've also never had a job interview that lasted just ten minutes. One interview I had lasted from 9a.m. to 7p.m. with a three hour session the next day. During and after your interview write notes. You should have a business folder with extra copies of your resume and reference list. Within that folder you should have a pad to jot some things down. The big thing here is to write down key things said during the interview that you need to remember later, names, places, follow-up requests, etc. These are just a few things I wanted to mention on here. I would like to see what others have to offer when it comes to surviving the interview process. I look forward to reading your posts. |

Changing Direction
I have been a mortgage processor for the last 11 years. Fortunately I am still employed but things are slowly changing where I no longer feel that my job is secure. As of Friday our wages were cut and changed to a commission only basis. These numbers are being based on what the company does for profits made and if we have a month like January my monthly income could be what my weekly income currently is. When the mortgage market began to fall apart I seriously started looking for something different to do with my life. Just like you, I am really good at what I do but it was all I knew. I began researching home based businesses and was surprised to find that even during a recession these businesses are still growing. So after much debate I decided to jump in. I started my home based business in July. Owning a business is not for everyone but I now have a back up plan for my future. Because of all the hype on the internet about making instant money, people think network marketing is a scam but I am hear to tell you it is not. I will not tell you I became instantly rich because I haven't. I will not tell you that it is easy because it has been far from easy for me. But I can tell that with hard work and determination this is a business that can replace my income. This business has been all about changing my direction, from changing my beliefs to a whole new set of skills to learn. If I lost my job today I would still have problems but I know if I lose my job I have a back up plan to work on. Have an open mind, you never know losing your job may be the best thing that ever happened to you. |

Changing Direction
For over 12 years I've dedicated my life to Broadcast Journalism. It's who I am, It's what I know. I've always felt that if you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life. But all that came to an end on Dec. 26, 2008. Merry Christmas... right?! Unfortunately, the world of broadcasting is going through major changes as stations across the country lose money due to lack of advertising and the trend towards the internet. I've discovered in my years of doing this line of work that it can be very unstable at times. With that said, I am entertaining the idea of changing my line of work. This is potentially the most difficult thing for many of us who've done the same job for so long... that we're not sure we can do anything else. When it comes down to it, the most important thing is to keep making money to pay the never ending cycle of bills in the mail. The last thing you want to do is lose your house, or have your power or gas shut off because you were a job snob. Reinventing yourself and changing careers could be the best thing to happen to any of us, if we keep an open mind. At least I'm trying too. I know that I am excited for the next adventure and chapter in my life. Please share your experiences on how you've changed direction and provide some advice for others going through the same difficult transition. |

Family Matters
Without my family I could not have made it through this! Fortunately, I'm married to my best friend and we've always been able to communicate. As we all know good communication is key in any relationship, but when you add job loss on top of that, it becomes the highest priority to make sure everyone's on the same playing field. We found it important to talk about job searches, relocation options, survival modes, and most importantly finances. Any marriage/family counselor will tell you that the number one reason couples fight is money. We wanted to make sure that wouldn't be factor. So my advice as you go through this time... is to talk, talk, and talk some more. Write down your plan and review it if you need to. Together you can get back on your feet in no time. If you aren't married, this will be a true test of how close your friends and family members are. They will be your support network to get you through it all. Despite having a great wife, my cousin helped us by providing great support by allowing us to stay with him during our transition to the next chapter. Please share some of your experiences. Perhaps you've come across some great resources from the internet and want to share with others. If you just want some advice from others on how to handle certain situations during these times, post your question and others will help you outl. |

First Week
I have to say that the first week of unemployment was a little rough. There are so many levels of emotions I've gone through and the stress is unpredictable. In my case I knew a few months in advance that my contract wasn't going to be renewed due to budgetary constraints. In short... with no cash coming into the company... there's no money to pay higher salaries. With that said, I thought I had an upper hand compared to the millions of others who were just getting their notice the same day they were let go. But despite actively pursuing job leads for months, my deadline fast approached with no job in sight. Then one day, sooner than expected, I found myself unemployed. I was now a statistic in the largest recession in recent history. At first I thought to myself, "This is cool I get to spend some time with my family." Yeah that only lasts so long, as the decades of non-stop daily grind wants to continue to grind. I found myself doing petty things around the house to keep me busy. The boredom set in quickly! I contacted my local unemployment office to get the information needed to file for my benefits. I discovered since I lived in a state separate from where I worked, I could file via the internet. My advice to anyone out there is to make sure you read and understand everything you're filling out. One box checked incorrectly and your benefit approval can go into a review period that will delay your money. Yea... that's what I did. I made sure to call the unemployment office to speak to a Claims Representative to go over my application. Good thing I did! I had selected to the wrong reason for release from my job and my file would have been delayed for weeks. My Representative made sure everything was straightened out as to not delay my first check. I have to say, I was very embarrassed talking with this Representative. I felt like a bum sponging off society. What made it worse, she was a loyal viewer and had watched our Morning Show. She explained that I had been paying into my unemployment benefits all along. And like health insurance, I was entitled. That certainly cushioned the blow. I hope others will share their experiences on this site. I want it to provide as much information possible to help others experiencing unemployment. |
